Watch as the artist Dennis Oppenheim, renowned for his large-scale, site-specific sculptures, takes us on a tour of three iconic buildings in New York City: Frank Gehry’s IAC Headquarters, Ely Jacques Kahn’s 120 Wall Street, and Gregory Johnson’s Empire State Building.
Oppenheim calls Gehry’s building "an extremely pleasant visual structure" and notes that it’s more restrained and resonates more than the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. In the 120 Wall video, Oppenheim discusses how the tower influenced Minimalist artists such as Sol LeWitt in the 1960s. And on the ESB, Oppenheim observes how the tower has been reduced to a token that fits in one's pocket—and he explains how the building's lighting program has influenced similar lighting efforts around the world.
